Overview
My day-to-day responsibilities typically involved ensuring all paperwork for the day’s activities was up to date to allow work to commence. I also checked that subcontractors’ or labor teams’ tasks were properly and safely set out, took site surveys for senior engineers, and ensured all activities were well documented by completing daily diaries and reports to track the project’s progress.
Skills
Yes, I developed my existing skills in surveying and AutoCAD, gaining confidence with equipment like GPS and total stations. I also improved my project management and problem-solving abilities, while enhancing soft skills like communication, teamwork, and time management.
Responsibilities
I was given a fair bit of responsibility once I became competent in my ability using the equipment and was able to undertake certain tasks on my own. However I would usually be accompanied by another engineer on major activities so that any of my work could be checked.
Support & Guidance
I was given a lot of support and guidance over my time with BAM. I usually shadowed an engineer which helped me with any of my questions. The rest of the team were also happy to help.
Culture
The culture was very supportive and collaborative with an atmosphere that was friendly and professional, making it easy to settle in and feel part of the team.
Your Impressions
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement. It provided valuable hands-on experience, allowing me to apply my skills in a real life project.
