Overview
This role focuses on maintaining and improving company processes and systems. You'll work on various tasks, including fixing and improving algorithmic trading systems, researching ways to make them more efficient from idea generation to implementation, and designing new systems to boost profits. The day-to-day tasks are varied, with no set routine, as you'll constantly trial new ideas.
Skills
In this role, I have developed my skills in problem-solving and maintaining complex systems through my improved programming skills while also having learned how the energy markets work.
Responsibilities
You are given responsibility from the day you start. There is a two-week handover period to learn from predecessors before you get given full responsibility (though it is an ongoing learning process).
Support & Guidance
The support during my placement was fantastic. The team was always helpful, and I regularly received guidance from my line manager and colleagues. There was a strong focus on learning, with opportunities for on-the-job training and internal courses. I was encouraged to take time to develop my skills and grow in the role.
Culture
The company culture at RWEST is really good. Everyone is friendly and eager to share their knowledge, making it easy for interns to learn. The flat structure makes colleagues approachable, which I liked. Also given the freedom to explore other teams/ business areas to understand how other desks and teams operate.
Your Impressions
I had an incredible experience during my placement at RWE. I learned so much throughout the year, more than I ever imagined joining the company.
Yes
Research what the company does and how the business makes money. Read about recent news related to the energy markets and how it might affect the company, which might be useful in interviews etc. Reaching out to the previous placement student would be very useful as they can give you more personal advice.
