Overview
Helped operate the laser for users. Research project was based around improving the facility, working in a state of the art optics laboratory, and programming various applications to go alongside this.
Skills
Improved practical skills, learnt LabVIEW and MATLAB, improved technical writing for reports etc., presented in work and to academics in the field at conferences.
Responsibilities
After the first couple months of getting trained and settled in, you are given a lot of responsibility. You are allowed into the laser labs for independent work. Help is available at any point if you ask for it but you are encouraged to tackle problems yourself first.
Support & Guidance
Lots of training provided from the department and also personal and career development from STFC as a whole.
Culture
A brilliant place to work. Very friendly and relaxed. Everyone was approachable and very knowledgeable, and was eager to share expertise.
