Overview
My role was helping the team design and implement electrical control and instrumentation systems. My role on a day to day basis consisted of daily team meetings as a check up, and working through documentation related to the system. The main aim of my role/tasks was that the documentation related to the systems were as accurate and in line with the standards, so that they were ready for review and authorisation.
Skills
I've learnt various skills such as MS office, teamwork/collaboration, effective communication, presentation skills, interpreting electrical schematics, Bill of Material, Change Control, loop powered devices, analogue signals, low voltage distribution. I have also been able to use my existing skills learnt in university such as circuit analysis skills.
Responsibilities
Yes, the amount of responsibilities/tasks that were assigned to me mirrored my colleagues amount of tasks. The responsibilities that were given to me were decided by manager and team mates.
Support & Guidance
I received quite a lot of support and guidance during my work placement. My manager had weekly sessions with me with the focus of transferring the skills that I obtained from university and using them effectively in the industry. Additionally, BAE Systems had early career specialist who also gave me support and guidance and often checked up on how I was getting along.
Culture
Hard-working and honest yet it was very friendly and people could be honest with what their issues and concerns were. Most people were always happy to help
Your Impressions
I enjoyed my placement a lot as I learnt various things that I wouldn't have at university. I was able to see where my learning from university would be useful in industry and how real world engineering works. As most of my work was office and documentation based, I would've liked to get a bit more hands on or see the design implementation coming to life.
