Overview
My role was to develop software based on the current needs in the department. This ranged from a web application for emails to an override for physical hardware on a device. I also led a software development team for robotics in my stretch assignment.
Skills
In terms of programming languages I learnt C++, WPF, C++/CLI, but I also learnt a lot of interpersonal skills and time management. Some projects I worked on my own but some were in a team. This reinforeced my paired programming skills and team work capabilities. In my strech assignment I learnt how to organise a team and how to divide up work based on each member's abilities.
Responsibilities
Yes. I was in charge of developing projects on my own for the internal team, but I also worked on projects for external clients that were to be used off site. In the stretch assignment I was team leader and was in charge of delivering projects on time and meeting the proposed requirements.
Support & Guidance
I received support from my line managers, and from the early carrers team. In my first placement at the company my manager was not always nearby so I struggled in certain parts to understand where to start and what to do. However towards the end of my placement I developed the skills to work these out on my own.
Culture
The company culture was amazing. Everyone was always happy to help with any issues that I had. They offered tours of different areas of the sites and I got the chance to see a lot of interesting different parts of the company. A lot of the staff working there had been working there for well over 20 years.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed the placement overall. At the start as I was left to be very independent I didn't feel as if I was being used to the best of my ability. However after reaching out to others in the wider BAE team, I found ways that I could still use my skills and make an impact in more ways than one.
Yes
It is important to prove that you want to be part of the defence industry. Why would you want to work at BAE is the most important question. For me I had wider family in the armed forces so defence was always important to me.
