Overview
My role involved working on a range of different HR topics, and gaining insight into the vast amount of specialised subjects that fall under the umbrella of HR. I would balance day to day HR work with working on projects in the wider business.
Skills
I learned and developed new and existing skills during my year at Siemens . In particular my communication skills have come a long way - likely due to the size of the company and the importance of being able to communicate efficiently. Given that Siemens is in the technology sector, I feel like I have learned some new IT skills which will be transferable.
Responsibilities
I was lucky enough to have a great balance. There was definitely responsibility placed on me, and this made me feel like I was a genuine employee and wasn’t being treated differently which was appreciated. At the same time, I was offered so much support that I felt like I could seek advice or help if I needed. My placement allowed me into conversations and presentations with senior management which was a fantastic responsibility.
Support & Guidance
The support that I was offered from my manager, team and the wider network of Siemens employees was amazing. I never felt like I had to pretend that I knew what I was doing, and the guidance that I received was massively appreciated and something that I have carried forward. I was still able to be independent however, and I never felt like it was overbearing. It was an extremely supportive place to work.
Culture
The company culture at Siemens is a very inclusive and dynamic one. Despite the size of the company, I always felt as though I knew someone that would be able to help with any issues or questions. I think this speaks volumes about the interconnected nature of Siemens. The general atmosphere in the office or on remote calls was always very welcoming. The relationships built in the office and on these calls made my placement so enjoyable.
Your Impressions
I absolutely loved my placement. Having had some time to look back and reflect on the year has made me even more appreciative of the opportunity. Considering it was my first ‘proper job’ I think I adapted very well to the ways of working and I actually looked forward to going into work on a morning. I have made friends for life during my year at Siemens and the work that I carried out will hopefully stand me in good stead for my final year at university, and beyond.
Yes
You’ve made a good choice to apply to Siemens! I would advise doing some research into the work that Siemens actually do in the UK - it may be different to what Siemens do in your mind. Utilise LinkedIn and other platforms to find people that may be working there and be inquisitive in your interviews.
