The Role
Really enjoyed this fantastic placement year with IBM. Have had full time jobs within similar sectors and have felt this placement has been much like these full time jobs.
Fantastic department to work within, with great support from managers and peers. Really felt valued by everyone within the company who I've interacted with.
Managers have given a great amount of support and guidance, however are happy to pull back and let me do my own thing when wanted. Have found this to be a good style that works well.
The amount of work given to me has been at a good level throughout the year. At very few periods have I felt overwhelmed or underwhelmed by the level of work.
A large amount of responsibility was given to me rather early on within my year. This allowed me to put forward my own ideas and help contribute towards the effectiveness of the department. This meant I have implemented several changes and have worked on several new systems of my own design.
Nearly all the skills learnt in my year will be able to be put to use in my future studies and beyond.
The Company
I worked at home for nearly all of the placement year, although this is not overly common.
Seemed to be set up rather well, however I didn't have much interaction with the placement team.
IBM has a large selection of free and paid training courses for business and personal development, of which I took several.

Working from home
I was offered to extend my placement until the start of my final year at university. Also coming back at Christmas for several weeks away during the university holidays.
The Culture
Working from home meant I had little interaction with other students beyond those within the department, but people working in larger locations have a much better social scene.
Working from home meant expenses were kept to a minimum
No nightlife to speak off, but not an issue for myself.
There were opportunities, but due to working from home this wasn't really possible.
