Overview
Researching various issues within the business area, assessing potential scope for solutions and business development. Formatting data and information for senior staff to utilise during discussions and briefings. Creating system architectures, authoring whitepapers, and occasional hands-on assembly and testing of equipment.
Skills
Learnt several new skills, and have developed some existing skills. For example, I have been able to make use of prior knowledge of the industry and technical developments, and have subsequently improved my research and collation skills. I have learnt new skills, such as Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE)
Responsibilities
I was largely independently tasked, with relatively low amounts of oversight within my work area, leaving me responsible for organising my own work flow and time. I have not been actively involved in leading any projects or teams.
Support & Guidance
I received a lot of support and guidance from the outgoing intern, however much of this was off their own back, as they had extended their placement in order to make the handover more drawn-out, and therefore smoother
Culture
Company culture and atmosphere was very standard. There were occasional events, though I was often too busy with work to attend. There were very few problems
Your Impressions
I am currently enjoying my placement, as it is giving me many opportunities for personal and professional development, as well as valuable insights into the defence sector
Yes
Be sure to research and understand the industry before starting work here, as wider knowledge can significantly speed up the rate at which you will be given greater responsibilities and access better opportunities within the business
