Overview
My general responsibilities over the course of my placement involved completing audit fieldwork and accounts preparation. Additionally, there were instances where I would also assist on work outside my department or my general field of responsibility.
Skills
I have learned skills specific for the work in Moore Kingston Smith, particularly with their software. Additionally, I have built upon the knowledge that I have gained from what I had learnt at university, as I learnt about audit previously. Lastly, I have also developed my soft skills further. Through audit, I improved my communication with both clients and my colleagues.
Responsibilities
There were opportunities where I, or senior members of the team, encouraged myself to take on work that was unfamiliar to me throughout my placement, This helped me develop my knowledge within audit and the different audit procedures and methods of the firm. There is also a standard for work completed, and I tried to ensure that my work met these standards. Therefore, it is up to you to make sure that work is completed at a good level.
Support & Guidance
My immediate line manager was very helpful, understanding and she always made sure to check up on me. This was the case for the entirety of my placement and I am very grateful. Additionally, as a junior you are assigned a designated buddy, who will be there when you need help or want to ask questions. Furthermore, when you are booked on an audit, the job manager and senior colleagues are always willing to help as well. Lastly, from my experience, everyone in the office are friendly and are always available to provide some sort of guidance.
Culture
The work culture is great! As a junior member of the team, people are very understanding of this and are always supportive in the way they provide you with help, guidance and areas to improve. This made it easier to approach others and ask for help in a timely manner. This has helped cement the idea of wanting to come back in the future. Lastly, the people made working in the office feel great, as it was both professional and social.
Your Impressions
Working at MKS has provided with me with invaluable experience and skills that will certainly help me in my final year at university and for the future. There were only a few times, where there were instances that I had no work to complete but other than that, the year was very insightful and I would highly recommend doing a placement at MKS. Work aside, I also made a handful of friends during my time at MKS, who made the year very enjoyable.
Yes
It's important to note that it takes time to develop your skills and improve your understanding - it took a few months before I felt entirely comfortable with the work expected from me. Additionally, it's important to show enthusiasm and a good attitude to wanting to learn. MKS also provides opportunities to improve understanding of software and audit fieldwork and I'd highly recommend to take advantage of this.
