Skills
Yes, I've learned numerous new skills - improved my coding skills, opportunity to work on projects in React/Typescript/Redux/Java - Spring/Python and technical articulation to explain features in meetings. I also improved my networking, task and time management, communication, and collaboration skills.
Responsibilities
Yes, I was treated just like any other team member and had a range of responsibilities, I also had the opportunity to work on and manage my projects (microservices) and test them on Kubernetes host.
Support & Guidance
I received excellent support and guidance from my team, during the training week at the start of my placement, and the opportunity to network and work with the rest of my intern cohort. We had a lot of online resources to learn and get started with project development, personalized training and help from my manager.
Culture
People at Nomura are very helpful and friendly. Anyone is always up for a coffee and a chat, I had multiple opportunities to reach out to senior management and get any career advice and this was really helpful. I had a lot of support from my team in feeling welcomed and up to date with all the projects. In general, the culture is very friendly, warm and welcoming.
Your Impressions
I loved my placement year. I had such a steep learning curve, and got the opportunity to work with many new and interesting projects - test it out using the latest available cloud technologies. I also made a lot of friends and attended a lot of networking/social events organized by the company, which gave me an insight opportunity into the wider group of technology and how it all comes together.
