Overview
The majority of my day was spent writing code and working on tasks that were mainly self-delegated. The tasks were a mix of bug fixes for current issues and small tasks that compounded as parter of wider project that I was working on. Most of my work was independent, however I did have frequent discussions with other team members to ensure projects aligned with the team's goals. I also gave feedback on merge requests.
Skills
I had previous experience in Java, which enabled me to pick up C# and .NET reasonably quickly. I also became familiar with various CI/CD tools, making our deployments more efficient and convenient.
Responsibilities
After the first month or two of building up my C# skills and developing a basic understanding of the system's architecture, I was given a big self-led project that enabled me to update many areas of the codebase to build as much exposure as possible.
Support & Guidance
The amount of support and guidance was perfect, as it very much depended on how much support I felt I needed. I had fortnightly meetings with my manager to discuss ongoing personal goals as well as team goals. I was also in daily contact with my team, discussing ongoing work. If I ever needed help, it was very easy to speak to other team members.
Culture
Everyone at the office was very welcoming and happily introduced themselves and their role to help with a wider understanding of the technology department at the company. It was very easy to approach senior people at the company with questions. The office was very nice to work at, with great amenities right in the centre of the city.
Your Impressions
I massively enjoyed my placement, which developed not only my technical and soft skills but also gave me a much better understanding of the financial and banking sector.
