Overview
As a Research Assistant for a Professor and Senior Lecturer at the Leicester School of Architecture, I actively contributed to research initiatives by conducting surveys, interviews, and analysing gathered information. This role supported the development of research papers.
Skills
Through this experience, I developed essential skills in data collection, qualitative analysis, and interpersonal communication.
Responsibilities
Yes a fair amount. I carried out interviews independently sometimes, as well as completing survey drawings and research that were then given and checked by my Supervisor. I would say that often I felt as though the responsibility of things that should not have fallen onto me, was in fact given to me. I found myself working more than I needed to (which was obviously unpaid).
Support & Guidance
A fair amount of guidance was provided. Miscommunications occurred sometimes but nothing serious.
Culture
It was just me working for the supervisor there was no culture or atmosphere. The supervisor was friendly and approachable.
Your Impressions
I found it interesting and enjoyed working on the research collected. However, towards the end I found myself wanting it to be completed due to the responsibilities, overtime and miscommunications mentioned above. The activities carried out themselves were very enjoyable and relevant.
Yes
Manage time wisely. Make sure you build a good relationship with supervisor. Do not work over the time needed, if you find yourself doing that, speak to someone. Do not expect it to be exactly like what you may do in the industry later on.
