Overview
I would collect a trolley full of rocks from the rock store in the Geology department and take them back to my work station. I would compare the ID card with the rock to the written information in the ID collection books. Once confirmed, I would tick it off, complete the ID card, and upload all of the information to an online spreadsheet so that all data was in one place.
Skills
I worked on my data inputting skills and my Microsoft Excel skills. Additionally, I improved my time management and organisation skills.
Responsibilities
Yes, I was in charge of my hours and how and when I completed them. I was lone working so organised my time well and only went to the technicians when I needed access to the rock store to either return or retrieve new rocks.
Support & Guidance
The first day of my internship my supervisor showed me the ropes. From there I was independent but she would check in on me throughout the day to see if I needed anything. At the end of my internship, my supervisor took me for a coffee and we had a chat about the internship and how we felt it went for both of us.
Culture
Excellent, all of the technicians are lovely and very welcoming and friendly.
Your Impressions
I thoroughly enjoyed my internship and feel grateful to be given the experience to work on many transferable skills over the summer before starting level 6 of my degree.
