Overview
As a Software Developer, I picked up tickets and collaborated with my team on assigned projects. I participated in daily stand-ups, sprint planning, and quarterly planning, contributing my ideas on various issues and topics. I felt like a full member of the team, no different from anyone else.
Skills
I have strengthened my Java programming skills from university and have also learned a lot of JavaScript. I gained experience with various industry tools, such as Jira, Jenkins, and other utilities. My thought process has shifted to focus more on developing software that aligns with a long-term vision and is easily upgradable. I enhanced my use of OOP and SOLID principles and improved my communication and teamwork skills.
Responsibilities
I believe I was given the right amount of responsibility. I handled specific tickets and tasks, while the overall project responsibility rested with the entire team. During the placement, I was also assigned an intern project and some presentations/demos, for which I had greater individual responsibility.
Support & Guidance
I always had my manager to rely on, as well as a 'buddy' who supported me in getting used to the new environment and connecting with new people. Additionally, I had a mentor who helped me with technical questions and debugging issues. Visa also provides a large library of courses, offering resources to learn virtually any skill you'd like.
Culture
Everyone was welcoming, and I was included in all team outings and meetings. I quickly felt like a part of the team and got along well with everyone. Overall, the team was friendly and always willing to help with any task.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed my placement and grew both technically and socially. After a year at Visa, I felt like a different person in terms of problem-solving and collaboration. I had the chance to work with people from different backgrounds and cultures, which was both useful and fun. Visa also organises social events and team lunches that keep office life a bit more engaging. I would recommend this placement to my friends!
Yes
You need to research the company and understand its values. Be prepared to discuss your technical knowledge and answer a variety of related questions. Additionally, soft skills are important, so make sure to practice those as well. Asking questions is really good, and asking meaningful questions is even better.
