Overview
In an average week, might go on board the submarine one to two times, rest of the week will be spent doing analysis and technical write up of the testing. Other work includes maintaining testing equipment, helping out with other ongoing projects and just general learning/studying.
Skills
yes - technical skills used in the department - presenting skills - teamwork skills -etc
Responsibilities
yes, perhaps too much. My line manager admitted he put too much on my plate at the end of my placement. I was given a big task and presented a good piece of work at the end. The department itself holds a lot of responsibilty and just by working there you are under a lot of pressure to be responsible and use good judgement with sensitive data.
Support & Guidance
not enough to be honest. I managed just fine and when people were available they were always happy to help. But it was just unfortunate I joined at a time where the department was incredibly busy and my manager spent months away on trials. This was happening while my work was picking up and thus I had to be quite independant.
Culture
very friendly and inclusive with the new starts. Decent amount of social events outside of work. Wider company has some general issues and things that could be improved but nothing unusual as far as major companies go.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed it a lot, the work was so interesting and submarines are awesome. I was under a lot of pressure with the difficulty and size of the work I was given though.
Yes
- research/study before the interview - be ready to put up with living in industrial, dull towns - there is a lot of pressure to act responsibly - get as involved as you can, sometimes work doesn't come to you unless you ask
