    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Most of time is spent in CAD designing the prototypes through iteration in Fusion 360, going back and forth from CAD to printed parts and vice versa, before creating a working mechanism assembly model, and then getting the go ahead to flesh out the whole rest of the prototype in Fusion before printing, assembling and filming a pitch video. Involved some elements of cataloguing tests etc as the guarantee of a working prototype is not certain.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Fusion360 quite well to a beginner level, using for about 5hrs per day per week. Understanding of 3D printing, tolerances etc improved dramatically Communication and collaboration skills drastically improved. cleanliness and sense of self worth in myself

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Loads - I felt incredibly meaningful to the business's future success and saw two of my projects go far with major toy companies, with about half of my projects that I worked on, particularly playsets and arenas being great successes also, while I struggled greatly with water based toys. But yes, one of the bosses made me feel incredibly valued and provided great feedback direction, input and positive support.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • As mentioned, my boss was great, encouraged me in the first weeks to ease into it, started me with an easier project with few complicated mechanisms to get into the flow and start picking up Fusion360, allowing me time to get used to the software through practise tutorials.also was great at always helping me out and passing on his years of experience to me when I got stuck.

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from your line manager?

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from the wider team?

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Very nice atmosphere, almost family like. I did not integrate well at first and would even argue I was disliked by the team in general for the first half of my placement, but I felt I put in the work after a great awakener to turn myself around and now am happy to say I am still in touch with some of the fellas at DBT.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • Cannot express how this has been the most academically enjoyable moment of my life. Final year here at the moment in comparison to my year at DBT is a complete drag and a half that makes me wish I was still working for DBT quite frankly.

  • 7. Would you recommend DesignByTouch to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to DesignByTouch
  • If they are taking on more interns in the future, go for it, it was just the right job for me and seemed to work to all the things I am interested in and did not involve my weakest areas of design such as drawing, ideation and talking to clients.
