Overview
A mixture of research, data handling tasks, or design tasks for a variety of projects. For example this could be researching the difficultis of using VR for disabled people, compariing data on climate and operating condition of equiptment or designing a virtual environment.
Skills
Learnt new skills in VBS4 and a little bit in R. Also had opportunities to learn about Virtual Reality technology which I have not had much experience in before.
Responsibilities
Not given much responsibility. Felt often that tasks I was given were not important to the outcome of the overall project and that I was just doing things to save someone else from doing it.
Support & Guidance
Got good support from the university and okay support from DSTL. My line manager changed 3 times over the course of my placement year which I think affecteed the quality of support I recieved.
Culture
Very nice workplace culture and environment. The people were very friendly and often keen to help me get the most of my placement experience. Good outside of work social opportunities aswell.
Your Impressions
Overall I enjoyed aspects of it such as meeting people and the verall workplace culture. Howver large parts of this placement were very boring. I had to be very self-motivated to learn new things and make the most of it. Alot of the work didnt feel very rewarding.
Yes
Don't be surprised if at first you are placed in an area that doesnt seem to match your expertise. There are alot of opportunities to move around and find work that is interesting to you.
