Overview
My role was to assist the head of the flow trading department and help on the day-to-day work on the equity derivatives corporate trading desk. You check at the trading book, book new trades, scan the risk and voice it to the team through reports. I mainly coded to automate pnl and risk reports. Would also analyze pnl to explain which effects impacted us the most on the given period.
Skills
Better understanding of the market, raised my social awareness as you understand when is a right time to talk, improve your coding skills and presentation skills (keeping it short), got some lectures on some derivative products or effects too
Responsibilities
Yes quite a lot. As soon as you show that you are keen and comfortable with your tasks, they will reward that proactivity and will try to make you step up on bigger roles or projects. That was really nice. Getting to see different parts of the business
Support & Guidance
A lot. The team has a wide degree of experience so I had a managing director giving my life and career tips, while the junior would give me early career tips. Also the company and trading floor is large so you get to meet and bond with really nice people who can help you out or guide you as well
Culture
It was a really good atmosphere and I relate a lot to the culture. Otherwise I wouldn't have stayed too. It's a right balance with a flatter structure than you can find on the street. European culture with an international twist. People are approachable even very senior ones, not getting judged for making an error, aware that you are still learning and happy to help
Your Impressions
I loved it, was a great team, learned a lot, met nice people and had fun. Some periods where more busy than others and the hours during winter can be a bit tough due to the lack of light but that's more related to the season and the fact of working in London
Yes
Read about the markets, try to talk with people working in finance to have a better understanding of the offer and environment, read the Hull to have an overview of the products or activity carried in the global market division
