The Role
My placement year was very enjoyable and the people here have been very welcoming and friendly.
I have been out on many social events organised by the company and each has been a success. Several of us would also go out for lunch on Fridays at the local college to catch up with how the week had gone for everybody,
Both my supervisor and mentor have been extremely helpful and are a constant source of knowledge and advice.
Science is unpredictable! Some days were extremely busy and others were mostly spent writing up experiments or my report but there was always work for me to do.
After I had gained confidence in the lab I was allowed to work solely on my own project and I would be required to present the work at project meetings afterwords.
I have been exposed to many useful laboratory techniques that will be invaluable when it comes to my final year at university. Additionally I have been taught to question everything which is a good skill to have when approaching a scientific career.
The Company
Lab work was always enjoyable as there were usually many other people working at the same time.
The placement was very well run and the students well looked after.
I was invited to all meetings relevant to me which allowed me to develop my understanding of the company further. My supervisor and I would have weekly 1:1 meetings in order to discuss results and my progress and my project manager also invested time into helping me further myself.
Sports and Social Club
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
Above 25 days holiday
There are a number of graduate programs available for application however for a research career I would like to obtain a PhD before approaching any organisation for employment prospects.
The Culture
There were two of us here on my placement! We got along very well and would organise to meet and socialise outside of work.
My placement was in Cambridge which is a fairly expensive place to live and socialise.
There are a number of bars and clubs in Cambridge but should these not be enough there are very good travel connections to London for a better nightlife.
The site in Cambridge has a social committee which organises events to attend outside of work. This year I have been indoor skydiving, raft building, been to see the Spamalot play and participated in many more events.
