Overview
Call with team to establish tasks for the day. Then I would make sure that our received data lines up with what we expect to receive. Investigate any errors in data if any. Fix if needed. Work on any delegated tasks. Upload to git completed work for review.
Skills
This placement has improved my team working and planning skills due to the responsibility placed on us for projects like the SKI programme. My employment had given me great insight to what it is like working in a 9-5 corporate environment, including handling company permissions, daily stand ups, common practices and tools, time management, and having a line manager to report to. I have learnt a lot of new skills for programming and developed plenty I had previously. One skill I have come a long way with over this year has been Python. I had very little Python experience beforehand but thanks to EODS and the training course I am very confident in using it and navigating it and its frameworks such as Django.
Responsibilities
While all my code would be reviewed before being pushed to production, I had direct access to code (backend and frontend), virtual machines, passwords, git repositories, private codes, accounts, and was trusted with catching any errors in the data our satellites would send us.
Support & Guidance
My team would discuss with me every morning what needed to be done. My line manager would help me with any events or services. Members of my team were more than happy to give me insight on any work I was unfamiliar with, especially as I was being introduced to concepts I had never encountered before. There were plenty of training courses for me to take during any time I had between tasks. They had an initiative for new employess in order to help us understand what was possible to do with a career in the company and learn how to direct our own client given job.
Culture
Very friendly and always happy to answer a question. They were very encouraging and understanding
Your Impressions
I found the job very rewarding most days. There was also plenty of opportunities to meet other new employees at events. The initiative also included a time to go up to London to present our project which was a very enjoyable event with lovely catering and good bonding.
Yes
There is plenty of opportunity for horizontal mobility with the job. Make sure you know for sure which office you are supposed to work at and where that builiding is.
