Overview
Technical genetic laboratory work, performing PCR, gel electrophoresis, Illumina sequencing, sequence analysis using alignment software and In situ hybridisation. This involves physically working in the lab, but also preparing for this in an office based environment. Working with colleagues or scientists to help them with their workloads. Preparing experiments for my own research project, and writing this up as a scientific paper styled report.
Skills
Developed so many lab skills already mentioned. But also participating in meetings. I learned a lot of presentation skills when presenting my work in small groups in meetings, but also when presenting my whole years work to industry experts at the end of the year. I also now understand the inner workings of a workplace more and also office etiquette.
Responsibilities
Yes, I was left alone to do and organise most of my lab work, unless I needed training. Given the opportunity to contribute to other scientists' work and become a co-author on multiple publications. On one project, I was leading the lab work and planning of the genetics side of the project. This project found significant evidence that is now being published, with myself as second author of this paper.
Support & Guidance
I was given a lot of support, both personally and professionally by many people at Cefas. My supervisor was very good. She'd explain anything I asked, as I always had a lot of questions and gave me a lot of guidance and expert knowledge when it came to developing and performing my project work. I never felt pressured to do anything as it was a very relaxed work environment. There were many people there I felt I could ask advice from, either in regards to my work or my future career.
Culture
There was a very relaxed work environment and everyone was very friendly. People were also happy to help with anything I needed. This place was perfect as a placement student as it was a professional work setting, but there wasn't too much pressure to perform, it was more centred around learning and developing your own skills, which I really liked.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed my placement as I learned so much. Mainly the lab skills and organisation of work, which has really helped me with my final year project. I've also made some great connections in the field. Also, I lived on my own for the first time which I really enjoyed, also learnt a lot from. I also really enjoyed living near the coast, as the area was beautiful.
Yes
Make sure they start your security clearance application as early as possible, as I had to work in the lab for 3 months before receiving a hard pass, which makes things logistically difficult. Make friends and try to enjoy the work you're doing, as this is what made my experience so good. Explore the area, as there's so much to see and some amazing landscapes along the Jurassic coast!
