    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I would arrive at the job site to start work at 9, I would look into the board and see what tasks I was assigned for the day. This tasks could be anything from fish prep to cleanings. We would do most of this tasks in the morning. 3 times a day we would stop what we were doing to assist the trainers in the training sessions. We had 45 minutes brake and then at the afternoon we had more cleanings to do. Our work day finished at 17

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Yes, I developed the following skills: Diet preparation of dolphins, pinnipeds and penguins. Hygiene and sanitation of food prepping areas. Assisting the training sessions. Assisting husbandry and veterinary procedures of 7.0.0 Atlantic bottlenose Dolphins and 2.0.0 black-sea bottlenose dolphins. Behavioural observation of Atlantic bottlenose and Black Sea bottlenose dolphins. Preparation of nutritional enrichment. Introduction to training method of dolphins. Habitat security and safety.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes, I was often intrusted with the diet preparation of the animals. This is important because I have to make sure the diet is correct for each animal and there is no bad fish that is being fed. also I was entrusted with pool security and visitor safety, making sure visitors are safe and respect the rules of the park.

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I received very good support throughout my placement. The placements team at Plymouth University were amazing and kept in touch with me through email. Whenever I had a porblem they were quick to get back to me and very cordial as well.

  • I really enjoyed my placement. I made new friends and created good contacts in the industry which I believe they will help me when I finish my course.

  • Yes


  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Attica Zoological Park
  • Make sure you realize its very hands on job, whether is cold or hot, the job needs to be done. Also it is very physical, so if you are not ready to be tired (but happy) be aware.
