Overview
On a day-to-day basis, I would research similar charities and reach out to some that were doing something similar to better understand the workings of REAP. One of the research aims was to find opportunities to collaborate with other charities to reduce costs and increase outreach.
Skills
New skills learnt were creating a research document for stakeholders for use in decision-making. I also learnt to use CANVA for posters and Instagram posts.
Responsibilities
Yes, I was given much responsibility and free rein on how to deal with it. There was a lot to do in such little time; our supervisors were helpful in helping streamline how we intended to go about accomplishing our tasks. Working in a team, I also got the opportunity to be the team lead for one of the tasks.
Support & Guidance
I received so much guidance and support during the placement from both the supervisors and team members. We had weekly meetings with the supervisors to go over the work done, ask questions, and also to point us in the right direction. With my team members we had meetings twice a week, before the meeting with supervisors and after, to ensure we were all on the same page and everyone was doing OK with their tasks.
Culture
The company culture and general atmosphere were very calm and relaxed. You could tell everyone was working hard; deadlines were set, but you were not made to feel like you were under pressure to keep to pace. If things weren't working how you thought or hoped, someone was always available to assist or guide you. It was also very friendly.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed the placement. I got to make new friends and see how things work in a not-for-profit setting. I also got to feel like I truly helped a community. The organisation also made me feel heard and appreciated, which greatly improved my morale.
Yes
Go in knowing that you will enjoy your time getting to work with them. You will contribute to a community, help others be safe and comfortable, and also get to work with supervisors who will make you feel like a young professional capable of accomplishing anything and everything.
