Overview
Operations daily will differ within my role depending on what tasks will take priority. It will involve independent work and communication with various teams on numerous projects. Punctuality, being a good listener, being a good communicator, having some technical proficiency, curiosity and a positive attitude are all key when working in Cybersecurity. The shared goal of everyone is for overall good quality security across the company, this means that no fear should exist when communicating with anyone within the company to obtain the relevant information to do your job in good time and at a good standard.
Skills
I have been learning new skills and been mainly refining my soft communication skills. The more technical skills that have been learned and applied at the moment are Power BI and Excel skills due to being in the GRC department at the moment in addition to problem solving skills. There will be plenty of meeting, a lot of reviewing of existing work, a lot of cross company communication for relevant data to assess frameworks, technology, analysis and reporting to relevant stakeholders.
Responsibilities
I am being given a moderate amount of responsibility. The responsibility for work starts off a bit slow as you get adjusted into the company but after the initial settling in phase the work will start to flow with frequency at around 2 weeks in and soon I was given multiple projects to work on in numerous areas within security and many points of contact to communicate any queries I have depending on the projects.
Support & Guidance
I received a good amount of support and training through communicating with my talent coordinator, my project leads, my department managers, project managers and the early careers team in addition to additional training in other areas of the business' operations and external early careers training put in place by NESO.
Culture
The culture of the company is about being open minded, accepting, positive, collaborative and flexible to meet the needs of the employees as well as, the employees meeting the needs of NESO. You are able to work the way you want whether it be from home or in the office as frequently as you require it and can have a flexible schedule that will enable anyone to start and finish at times that fit them as long as it is cleared by management and the required working hours are met by the end of the working week. You are able to speak to anyone in any department from senior management to the base of the hierarchy and everyone is welcoming and open to interaction. The offices depending on the days can be quiet or busy with a secure campus at numerous sites around Britain. There are plenty of activities and workshops also put on throughout the year to help development for all in the company and build relationships.
Your Impressions
I am enjoying it a lot and have the flexibility to move across departments wherever there is an opening and if the operations of the department interest myself and what I will be interested in knowing for my development as I am to move departments every 6 months while on my graduate placement scheme.
Yes
To go in with a positive attitude, an open mind and remember that it is okay to be uncertain about things and nervous especially being in new surroundings with new people. Pushing yourself and your boundaries for development is important in a growth mindset and how to develop in NESO.
