    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Currently I am on my third and final placement of the NESO graduate scheme in a coding role where I am developing a tool that will be used externally with stakeholders. I am also designing and creating a user interface for the tool to improve the user experience. By using Power Systems CAD, I've also developed my understanding of the electricity grid and power flows from generators to grid.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I had very limited knowledge of coding at university and struggled with it but now I have had time to learn in a much less stressful environment, I've built on developing this skill. In a previous graduate placement, I got the chance to work in a finance and project development team where I learned huge amounts from how to engage with financial advisors to about how large grid-scale batteries work.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • Within my placement teams, I've always had a very supportive and present manager who makes time to check-in. I also have another manager who deals with wellbeing, expensing and more who has supported me well during my time at NESO and offered advice when I've needed it. Whilst on the graduate scheme, the Early Careers team have helped to facilitate any extra projects I've wanted to do, have advised me when I've needed guidance and have set up relevant training for my cohort throughout the scheme.

  • I haven't been over-pressured or rushed during my placements which has meant I've had the space and time to learn. With encouragement from my managers, I've been able to achieve more than I expected. The office days are always very engaging as there are a lot of people around to chat to or get help from. the environment is one where it is okay to make mistakes and where your successes will be noticed.
