Overview
This depends hugely on what team you get assigned, some of the PSE roles assigned are looking into systems investigations and network security, others are looking at future connections or control room support roles. In our time here we will be in 3 different roles and there is a lot of flexibility amongst them, with the opportunity to do a broadening placement for your 2nd placement, you can gain experience in areas outside the field you are currently in, for example going into data science if you are in a power systems engineering role
Skills
Over the past year, I have significantly enhanced my understanding of power systems, delving deeper into their complexities and applications. Additionally, I have honed my communication skills, enabling me to convey technical information more effectively to diverse audiences. My presentation skills have also improved, allowing me to deliver clear and engaging presentations. These developments have collectively strengthened my ability to contribute to projects and collaborate with colleagues.
Responsibilities
It varies from role to role however in my current role i have been given oversight of a project involving policy changes. There has been a fairly rigid set of tasks made to accomplish this, however this came from higher in the company, and I have been given complete responsibility on how I want to manage this piece of work Overall we are trusted to complete the work we are assigned without heavy oversight.
Support & Guidance
The support structure has been good in this placement, you obviously have your manager that deals with direct work and your day to day tasks , who will handle in role issues and training. Then outside of that you have another manager who is responsible for the more pastural side of things, and will help you manage expenses, stress and workload.
Culture
Company culture is good, everyone is very friendly and open. Most people will help you if you have nay questions, and even if they do not know the answer then they will assist you in finding that information. As well as this wellbeing has e high focus at NESO;, both physical and mental, and there are numerous support systems to help with issues in both areas.
Your Impressions
I have very much enjoyed my placement so far, it has offered several learning opportunities and I find the day to day work interesting. Furthermore the rest of the graduate cohort are all very enthusiastic and makes working here a pleasure.
