    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Team: Technical Operations Policy My role within the Technical Operations Policy (TOP) team at NESO has been instrumental in deepening my understanding of NESO's broader organizational structure and the specific functions of the TOP team. This exposure has provided me with a comprehensive view of NESO and the critical responsibilities of the TOP team within the organization. Regular interactions with the TOP team, both within and outside NESO, fostered a powerful sense of belonging and integration. I actively seek out learning and development opportunities to enhance my skills and contribute effectively. Networking and engaging with various sectors within the company are essential for my professional growth. Joining new societies helps me stay connected to business and its diverse facets. One of my key responsibilities was taking ownership of the Frequency Excursion Analysis. I learned how to gather and analyze data for historical events and updated the TOP team files accordingly.

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • During my graduate development program in Power System Engineering, I was entrusted with a significant amount of responsibility regarding my tasks and objectives. The team I was part of was very supportive, always available to assist whenever needed, ensuring I stayed on track with my goals. This experience allowed me to work independently and understand the team's operations within NESO. It also ensured that all work performed was of high quality and professional standards.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • During my graduate scheme, I received extensive support and guidance. The program included mandatory training sessions, (both online and in-person, with an external company called Cappifinity) over 18 months. NESO provides numerous new starter training packs and in-person sessions to enhance company knowledge. I was paired with a graduate buddy in my field who offered significant encouragement and guidance on my role, with weekly check-ins to identify improvement areas and support my development. Additionally, my talent coordinator, who was also my line manager, conducted multiple advanced learning sessions in Power System Engineering.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoy my role, which includes three rotational jobs in the 18-month graduate development scheme. My favourite experiences were the Graduate Welcome Week on 23rd September 2024 and the Early Careers Christmas Party on 13th December 2024. During the welcome week, I met fellow graduates, developed friendships, and realised I am not alone in this journey. The Christmas party was also memorable, with over 80 participants from the Early Career scheme. It was a great day for networking, asking questions, and participating in team-building activities, such as assembling a bike, which was particularly enjoyable.
