Overview
As I joined I was immediately given a list of 12 tasks to try and complete during my year. This was helpful as it made my placement well structured, and gave me a clear vision on how my day to day tasks, which I was very unsure about before joining.
Skills
Being a placement student at AWE has taught me a huge amount about collaborating with wider teams. As I am based in systems engineering, I can be solving issues which involve every area of the business, which has given me a fantastic opportunity to talk and work with some of the most interesting and clever people I have ever met.
Responsibilities
The best thing about AWE is there ethos that placement students are important members of the team. My opinions and thoughts were taken seriously from day 1, and my task manager immediately gave me jobs with real responsibility.
Support & Guidance
AWE wont hold your hand during your placement. Its up to you to solve problems and make the most of your time. However, your task manager and line manager are always present and really approachable when a problem occurs. I have had fantastic support from friends in my office. I have found going to graduates who can relate to my experience superb help.
Culture
The company culture is superb. It is very welcoming and supportive. Even as an undergraduate, I have always been able to approach and talk with higher ups in the business, and everyone will make time for you.
Your Impressions
So far, I am enjoying my placement. I don't think the current position I am in suits me completely, however being a placement student has made me learn that, which I am grateful for. AWE have supported other placement students to move positions as well.
Yes
If successful, be inquisitive and ask lots of questions. There are so many interesting people that work at AWE and they will make time for you if you have the drive to do so.
