    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • In my role, I work extensively in the field of electronics, where my day-to-day tasks involve designing, developing, and testing electronic systems and components. I frequently use software tools like Siemens NX for 3D modelling and design, Mentor Graphics for electronic design automation, and LabVIEW for data acquisition and instrument control. This hands-on experience allows me to collaborate with cross-functional teams, solve complex engineering problems, and continuously learn and apply new skills in a dynamic and supportive environment.

  • During my placement, I have significantly developed both my technical and interpersonal skills. I have gained proficiency in using advanced software tools like Siemens NX, Mentor Graphics, and LabVIEW, which has enhanced my capabilities in electronic design and data acquisition. Additionally, working in a collaborative environment has improved my communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. Engaging with cross-functional teams and participating in project planning and execution has also helped me build strong interpersonal skills, enabling me to effectively contribute to team success and navigate complex engineering challenges.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes, I was given a considerable amount of responsibility during my placement. I was entrusted with key tasks such as designing and testing electronic systems, conducting research, and presenting findings to stakeholders. This level of responsibility not only allowed me to apply my technical knowledge in real-world scenarios but also helped me develop my decision-making and leadership skills. Working on critical projects and collaborating with experienced professionals provided a comprehensive learning experience and significantly boosted my confidence in handling complex engineering challenges.

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I received substantial support and guidance throughout my placement. My mentors and colleagues were always available to provide assistance, answer questions, and offer valuable feedback on my work. Regular check-ins and team meetings ensured I was on track with my projects and helped me navigate any challenges I encountered. This supportive environment not only facilitated my learning and development but also made me feel valued and confident in my contributions to the team. They also pushed me to reach the best version of myself, encouraging me to take on new challenges and continuously improve my skills.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The company culture and general atmosphere at AWE were incredibly inclusive and supportive. One of the highlights for me, especially as a Muslim, was the availability of a religious multifaith room. This thoughtful provision made me feel truly valued and respected, reinforcing that I was part of a company that stands by its values of inclusivity and care for all employees. The overall environment was one where everyone was taken care of, fostering a sense of belonging and community.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed my placement at AWE. Beyond my primary focus on electronics, I had the opportunity to diversify my experience by working with data analytics, value stream mapping, and even event planning. This variety not only kept my work engaging and dynamic but also allowed me to develop a broad skill set and gain insights into different aspects of the organization. The supportive and inclusive environment further enhanced my overall experience, making it both enjoyable and highly rewarding.

  • My advice to others applying to AWE is to take charge of your placement experience and maximize what you gain from it. Be proactive in asking questions and seek out opportunities to learn and grow. Approach your placement with a mindset of being a sponge, ready to absorb information and new skills. Take full advantage of the resources and support available to you, and use this time to develop both professionally and personally. Remember, the more you put into your placement, the more you'll get out of it.
