Overview
My role is Manufacturing Engineer so I look at how we manufacture our product and ways to improve that process. On a day to day basis I will typically be either doing paperwork or engaging with stakeholders via meetings and emails. They also say to allocate roughly 20% of your time to training and personal development so I will have days were I am doing a training course or learning about the company and product
Skills
I have learnt lean manufacturing skills as well as interpersonal skills on how to run meetings and engage with outside businesses. I have developed my skills in problem solving as well as design and manufacturing.
Responsibilities
I was given lots of responsibility. Which I believe has aided my development enormously and when the responsibility becomes too much and I make a mistake everyone is extremely friendly and happy to help and guide me so I don't make it again. There is a very supportive culture for undergraduates where people are always willing to support you with the responsibilities you are given
Support & Guidance
I have received numerous amounts of support and guidance from everyone in the department. Everyone is happy to teach and help when it comes to work as little technical knowledge is expected. The support in work life balance is also great and makes for a very relaxed environment. There is also lots of support for chartership and things to aid you in getting future jobs.
Culture
In general the culture is very nice in that most people are very friendly and happy to help and teach you provided they are not busy. There is also a nice atmosphere around work life balance and shutting off after work is encouraged which is very nice.
Your Impressions
I have enjoyed it a lot. The personal development and learning opportunities are a once in a life time opportunity. As well as that's there is such a nice work life balance and having every other Friday off is amazing. Only downsides are the location is a bit out there if you can't drive and the pay is minimum wage but if you don't mind that for one year its worth it for the fantastic amount you can develop here.
Yes
It can be a long process with having to get clearance but you just need to stick with it as it is worth it. I'd also say make sure to ask for help and wok and ask what others are doing. If you put effort into this year you can do incredible amounts. If you do the bare minimum you will not get much out of this year in industry. But if you engage with lots of people and work hard fantastic opportunities arise
