The Role
My placement year at Cooper has been both challenging but beneficial. I have had the opportunity to work with various teams and departments from numerous sites. The variety of work has been a key aspect for me.
The teams that I had the chance to work in appreciated my strenghts and weaknesses and did their best to ensure that I was being utilised. Even some colleagues that I didn't have projects with made the effort to bring me into different tasks.
I was very lucky to work in two high calibre teams that were focussed not only on seeing me succeed with my projects, therefore achieving results or improving processes, but my managers were very keen to see me develop professionally. Early on in my placement I was thrown into various presentations which at the time may had been nervewracking but I can confidently say that I have greatly improved as a result. I particularly felt that my managers were interested to see me have a successful career.
I had a perfect mixture of day to day tasks and project based time. If I felt that this balance became even at any point I had no qualms in sitting down with my manager to re-align where I should be spending my time.
I created work that will be used when I have left Cooper and work that I saw being used by senior management in my time. Day to day tasks even gave me the opportunity to speak regularily with customers and even process orders and high value quotations.
I firmly believe that skills I have learnt at Cooper will drastically improve my final year approach/work.
The Company
In both offices that I was given the chance to work in in my placement year, I experienced friendly but fast paced offices. Both teams allowed me to relax into my role swiftly and meant that I could not only produce high quality work but enjoy it at the same time.
The placement scheme was very well structured throughout the year ensuring that as an intern we were never short of contact time/training.
The placement year included numerous training days at different sites across the country which were very useful for not only the placement year but for my final year of studies back at university.
National Travel
Company Parties/Events
After recently presenting my year achievements to senior management, HR & my fellow interns, I have been offered a job to return on the Cooper Leadership Programme when I graduate from university.
The Culture
Due the numerous training days with the fellow interns, we often organised nights out after training in the various parts of the country where we were training.
Somerset cost of living was OK.
Somerset nightlife, there was none. Birmingham nightlife is very good.
Unfortunately at the offices I worked there were not many opportunities for activities outside of work.
