The Role
My Placement was enjoyable due to having good scope in my job role and being well respected by colleagues
I was in a small team, so my input was necessary for the team to run smoothly, also by being in a smaller team you are also able to be part of the decision making process rather than just being told what to do
On the whole I was given support and guidance from my manager, the only thing that keeps this from a 10 is one project I don't feel I was fully supported on, the rest I could ask for nothing more.
If anything I was slightly too busy. But the main thing that you should be looking for in a placement is to learn; by being in a role with a lot of work it enables you to learn more throughout the placement.
Due to being in Purchasing and spending company money there was a lot of responsibility attached. After the first few months I was working independently without anyone in the team checking my work.
I feel that if/when I find myself in a graduate role I was flourish, and I can see that before this work placement that I now have a far better skill set then I did when I came on board.
The Company
Everyone was open and friendly the majority of the time.
IBM have a very well organised overall work placement scheme, additionally my individual placement was well setup.
There are loads of free education tools to use which I would recommend, unfortunately I did not have the time around work to do all the ones I wanted, but this was a time management issue on my part.
Flexi Time
National Travel
Working from home
I have been told that I am in the upper level of placement students, and although they cannot offer people a job, it will give me an advantage as I will be 'fastracked' through parts of the graduate application process
The Culture
N/A - I heard that there is a strong social scene with the other IT's but due to my location I was not involved.
N/A - I was able to live at home during my placement
Acceptable but nothing to write home about
Endless Opportunities for most placement students - due to my location it was more difficult.
