The Role
I was an Events and Marketing Coordinator, and although sometimes the role could be repetitive the fun and unique tasks I got to take part in more than made up for it.
Was always treated like a real member of the team - rarely felt like a student
There was always help available should I need it, although often I would have to seek out assistance, and it wasn't handed to me on a plate.
Some very quiet days and some very busy, but generally a happy medium
At the start of my placement there was just myself and my manager in my immediate team - She left the company halfway through the year and for a good 2 months I managed the team single handedly.
Studying events I only get to learn the theory in my degree, but this role has offered me a chance to gain real experience in the processes involved.
The Company
There were several other placement students in my office which really helped the atmosphere and there is a strong community feel.
Very well organised - the placement team keep in touch throughout the year and are there for any issues.
There were training courses held on site throughout the year that were free to sign up to and attend - my management team were happy for me to attend such sessions.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
Subsidised/Company Gym
National Travel
I will have to go through the same procedure as anyone who has not previously worked for the company, but should I have high enough performance record at the end of the year I will be able to skip part of the recruitment procedure, and will generally stand a better chance of receiving a graduate role.
The Culture
Brilliant - there are around 60 placement students on my site so you're sure to meet someone you get along with. I lived with 3 other placement students, as did most others.
Living in Winchester, or generally nearer to Hursley, is quite expensive but living slightly further away in Southampton is a lot cheaper, and also a lot better for nights out. I lived in Eastleigh (cheaper than Winchester but generally more than Soton) and paid £370 per month, including bills.
Southampton is great as its a student city, and Winchester is also good if you just want a night at the pub.
Through work there are various sports teams etc that you can get involved in
