The Role
I really enjoyed seeing and understanding the various applications that Cummins provide to. I also really enjoyed getting hands on during my projects with model builds but at the same time I also enjoyed seeing a design move from concept to release.
The majority of staff members that I dealt with were really welcoming and willing to help. I really made new friends that I will try and stay in touch with once I have left
I felt I was given good support by my manager however sometimes I felt that I couldn't ask too many questions so I sometimes sought help from different people with a relevant role within the company.
Early on in my placement I found it difficult to know what to do on a daily basis but as I grew into the role I began to find that everyday held something new and there was always something I could find myself to do.
I felt I was given lots of responsibility to look after and develop work on my own projects and I feel this has improved my ability to work thoroughly and accept any mistakes I may have made.
I have learnt alot about how big companies work and the systems they use on a daily basis. I have also learnt alot about working with others and how the teams rely on each individuals knowledge on their area of expertise. I have also picked up a lot of technical knowledge that will help me in life as well as my studies
The Company
The office was never dull there was always people willing to have a laugh and discuss external activities and experiences which was really helpful as a placement student living in the local area.
Overall it was a well planned placement I found that a lot of the time you integrated into the team and took on your own projects. however regular IMechE meetings happened only one and after that did not continue. I have also been working within my department to try and make the change to the new placement students easier and smoother.
I felt time was invested into training with dial in training sessions available and also whenever possible we were encouraged to attend the technical training talks given by members of various departments.
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
Company Parties/Events
I feel the employment prospects are good within the organisation but the department i undertook my placement in did not have any job prospects for a long time.
The Culture
The placement students got on really well always helping each other out when they felt unsure about approaching senior members of staff.
I lived in Rugby which was reasonably priced for living though I did spend more than I would if I was at university because I was earning
Nightlife was not really the best compared to university however we found a local pub with a weekly pub quiz which we attended and got to know alot of the locals
I have regularly seen activities outside of work advertised within work they also have a great sports and social club and I joined the work cricket team and took part in friendly football every wednesday
