The Role
The work itself was varied, challenging and interesting. It often required extensive research; as well as learning to think in commercial terms.
The department I was situated in, as well as the wider office, were all extremely welcoming. Depsite only being in the firm for two weeks, I became well acquainted with a number of colleagues who have assisted me throughout.
I was given a regular flow of work from both my supervisor and trainee buddy. If ever I was struggling with a point or wanted to ask for an opinion on something, they were always happy to help.
In relation to the amount of time spent in the office, the level of work was very well balanced. I received regular work, often a few different tasks at once, but found myself able to manage my time effectively while keeping myself busy with the various tasks.
The level of responsibility varied from researching and offering opinions in respect of crucial aspects of cases; to administrative tasks. Each task, though, brings with it responsibility and one always feels as though their contribution matters.
The placement has provided me with an insight into how theory is implemented in pratice; more specifically, in the commercial context and the extent to which demands of business and legal issues interact.
The Company
The atmosphere was placid but pleasant. The office is still coming to terms with the merger as the integration process has not been completed as of yet. However, this had no adverse affect on my experience and found I the working environment to be most welcoming.
Organisation overall was very good. However, issues with communication arose a few times, which were unfortunately a result of the ongoing integration process following the merger.
I found the firm showed a real interest in me as an individual. The assessment process was rigorous, designed to gain a thorough insight into each of the students on placement. But the firm also strived to ensure that we all enjoyed our time there.
The firm itself is set to continue growth both domestically and internationally. It offers an excellent traineeship in terms of variation, exposure and responsibility.
The Culture
The trainees were largely responsible for the welcoming atmosphere. They arranged various social events and sought to engage with summer students whenever possible. In addition to this, they ensured we were kept busy by providing us with interesting pieces of work and offering assistance when necessary.
The surrounding area varies significantly in price. But it should be noted that the firm subsidised many of our social events, which got round any issues with price!
The nighlife in Glasgow is fantastic. Endless places to go, with a disparate array of choices.
Many social events were organised throughout the placement and we were encouraged to involve ourselves as much as possible.
