The Role
Like any job it wasn't all perfect, I had a few duller, data entry type tasks but also some exciting projects where I really had to use my brain & felt like I was making a difference to the company
Even though GE is such a huge company the building where I worked was only around 150 people & quite close knit. There are ~14 interns on site & that in particular was a very good network. Everyone is very friendly & I met & befriended people from all departments & management levels.
I had regular meetings, 2hrs two to one with my manager. Good time to get guidance & ask for feedback.
Varied a lot from time to time, sometimes very busy, sometimes struggling to find something to do. Nice to have the variety.
Given two projects to lead where I really felt I was making a difference & solving big problems, getting input across departments from many managers. There is a lot to do and no hesitation in giving big projects to inerns, still lots of guidance from team members and manager though.
I didn't really develop any skills that would be useful for my degree but many many skills which would be useful for worklife beyond university.
The Company
Lots of other interns so lots of opportunites to organise stuff. Went on several work organized trips too including go karting and GoApe, BBQs etc
Not much official training given, effectively treated as an employee rather than as an intern. Some opportunities for cross departmental job shadowing/ visit the shop floor.
Access to internal learning site & some online courses as well as business books. Training in general industry through lunchtime sessions. Unable to do any certified training.
Sports and Social Club
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
Above 25 days holiday
Healthcare from home
Applied but unsuccessfully. GE is so broad I can easily see myself interested in working here again in the future. Very good graduate programmes producing highly sought after and capable young leaders.
The Culture
Yes
Cheap compared to London.
Next to no local nightlife. Guildford is the next big town, several miles away but good nightlife there.
Many clubs operate through business park where building is located, available to GE employees.
