The Role
Lots of opportunities for interns to attend social events. Free Tickets to sporting events and films. Good opportunity to learn various aspects of finance. Very relaxed and friendly environment to work in. In a good location.
My manager was amazing, very easy to get a long with and i enjoyed her company. Most of the time she felt more like a friend then a manager but she was firm when needed to be. I got on well with all my colleagues and we regurlalrly went for team lunches together or had just general office banter. A few times senior colleagues had asked me for help with something which made me feel needed and i liked knowing something they didn't.
Had regular monthly meetings with my management to check on progress and how things were. My colleagues always gave their time to help me with something even during busy periods such as month end.
I started off with not much work which was to be expected as i had little to no knowledge. Towards the end of my placement i had to pass work over to toher people as I was so busy. I had a varied range of tasks which allowed me to experience a variety of roles within finance rather than being stuck in just one area.
I was given a lot of responsibility, moreso towards the end. I felt needed by my colleagues and that my prescence was noticed.
I learnt excel skills that Uni had never taught me. I was able to put some theory from uni into practice but mostly i learnt a lot of stuff that will be useful for my third year studies.
The Company
We had a jaffa cake challenge which everyone took part in. We had a sweet basket that was always topped up, the mix of people was great and we all got along. I foudn at ESPN the office was very fair you was given freedom to talk to your colleagues, indulge in banter and listen to music through headphones as well as watching sporting events on TV, But you knew the price of this was to not abuse this freedom and ensure the work still got done.
I was the second year that the finance department had had interns. Just before i joined there had been a high turnover of staff so my first 3 months were a little bit rocky as everyone was finding their feet. However, having learnt from this I have witnessed that this years intern has had a much easier introduction.
i felt quite a lot was invested in me, I was taught various processes but more so it was the time people spent with me explaining why things are done and the accounting theories behind it. My manager spent time with me improving my excel skills as well as verbal and written english (I have very poor grammer)
Company Parties/Events
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
Above 25 days holiday
Healthcare/Dental
I have been kept on for a further 3 months (then back to uni) I am now working as the financial accountants assistant. I would happily stay working here but unfortunately I have to finish my degree.
The Culture
I did not get involved too much with the intern socials, but was aware there were many events.
Nice cheap wetherspoons, belushi's was the place to go when the pub shuts, Many riverside pubs.
There is a very big volounteering programme within Disney.
