The Role
My placement year at Hays was certainly not the most exciting role ever, however I would still recommend Hays for a work placement if you are serious about gaining real business experience.
I worked in a great team during my placement and my colleagues definitely valued my work. Sometimes it did feel that my work went unnoticed, but after all I was just doing my job.
Hays provide extensive training for all their placement students, and students get trained to the same standard as consultants. I could always email my manager if I had any problems and they were always happy to help.
How busy I was depended on how much work my colleagues had on. Some days I was flat out, whereas other days I had less to do. On the days I had less to do I just had to ask and I would always be given new tasks.
With time you can take on more and more responsibility with Hays. It just depends on your manager and the division you work for. I was often left in the office on my own with full responsibility for the division I worked for. After speaking with my manager I also took on extra tasks outside my normal workload that had more relevance to my degree.
After working in recruitment you realise just how important work experience is for students, never mind the industry. I don’t plan on working in recruitment however the experience I have gained has been invaluable. I now have clear evidence of transferable skills that can be applied to any job once I graduate. Skills I have developed include – Problem solving, Communication, Marketing, SEO, Organisation and Event management.
The Company
Fast paced, sales atmosphere. With a great team spirit.
The placements were very disorganised when I started and no one seemed to know what was going on, so it all depended on your manager the hours you worked and the type of work you did. However this year’s recruitment process is definitely clearer as Hays have a new recruitment coordinator that manages student’s placements and can clear up any queries.
At the start of the placement students were given full training to the same standard as full time, permanent consultants. Training is also availbale throughout the year covering many different areas.
Financial Bonus
Company Parties/Events
There are lots of opportunities to work for Hays after a work placement, and a great place to work in terms of career development.
The Culture
Hays is a very social place to work, in terms of nights out, team/office celebrations and the chance to take part in charity events.
There are lots of different options to socialise no matter what your budget is.
Leeds has a large variety of nightlife on offer.
