The Role
Working with Vauxhall greatly improved my knowledge and understanding of the automotive industry. The projects provided were really challenging, containing a high level of involvement with warranty issues, design changes and local school projects. All of this responsibility was really exciting and beneficial to my development as an engineer.
Vauxhall provide a great deal of support to all new undergraduates, and are very experienced at developing individuals to their full potential. My role required constant communication with the Vauxhall team, helping to produce valuable information that could then be acted upon.
Help is available when required, but you are also taught the values of being independant by taking responsibility and learning to manage and develop your own tasks.
I was given daily tasks, alongside important projects and real time issues to deal with. At the start of the placement it was a huge learning curve, but by the end I had developed myself to manage all the tasks and work at a comfortable pace.
I worked on improving the quality of the cars produced within the unit, and also dealt with customer warranty issues. There were many occasions where I had to present to highly ranked managers, which even included the European Quality Manager! The undergraduate team are also given the task to represent Vauxhall and manufacturing to all schools in the local community.
The vast experience gained from working with Vauxhall provided a huge personal development in my confidence and understanding. I attained problem solving qualifications, system development and management skills, alongside a great deal of knowledge that will be really beneficial to my future career.
The Company
The office is placed in the middle of the vacinity, working alongside managers and engineers, meaning that it is constantly busy and motivated.
All required training and introductions to the workplace were given within the first week, and it didn't take long to get involved with some projects.
I have worked to attain international qualifications, and participated with many team building activities, which were very enjoyable and have been very beneficial to me.

It is very valuable to understand manufacturing, which is why I have enjoyed my placement so much, but I will be looking to work more with design, which is not available at Ellesmere Port.
The Culture
There are around 20 undergraduate places, and a lot of us lived nearby, making the evenings and weekends very enjoyable throughtout the year.
Chester is a very nice place to live in and is worth the price!
Lots of bars, only a few clubs, but still a great night out.
Mainly sport related activities such as football, tennis, and leisure activities.
