    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Working with Vauxhall greatly improved my knowledge and understanding of the automotive industry. The projects provided were really challenging, containing a high level of involvement with warranty issues, design changes and local school projects. All of this responsibility was really exciting and beneficial to my development as an engineer.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Vauxhall provide a great deal of support to all new undergraduates, and are very experienced at developing individuals to their full potential. My role required constant communication with the Vauxhall team, helping to produce valuable information that could then be acted upon.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Help is available when required, but you are also taught the values of being independant by taking responsibility and learning to manage and develop your own tasks.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was given daily tasks, alongside important projects and real time issues to deal with. At the start of the placement it was a huge learning curve, but by the end I had developed myself to manage all the tasks and work at a comfortable pace.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I worked on improving the quality of the cars produced within the unit, and also dealt with customer warranty issues. There were many occasions where I had to present to highly ranked managers, which even included the European Quality Manager! The undergraduate team are also given the task to represent Vauxhall and manufacturing to all schools in the local community.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The vast experience gained from working with Vauxhall provided a huge personal development in my confidence and understanding. I attained problem solving qualifications, system development and management skills, alongside a great deal of knowledge that will be really beneficial to my future career.

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The office is placed in the middle of the vacinity, working alongside managers and engineers, meaning that it is constantly busy and motivated.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • All required training and introductions to the workplace were given within the first week, and it didn't take long to get involved with some projects.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I have worked to attain international qualifications, and participated with many team building activities, which were very enjoyable and have been very beneficial to me.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • It is very valuable to understand manufacturing, which is why I have enjoyed my placement so much, but I will be looking to work more with design, which is not available at Ellesmere Port.

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There are around 20 undergraduate places, and a lot of us lived nearby, making the evenings and weekends very enjoyable throughtout the year.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Chester is a very nice place to live in and is worth the price!

  • Lots of bars, only a few clubs, but still a great night out.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Mainly sport related activities such as football, tennis, and leisure activities.
