The Role
Excellent experience, the quality of the training is superb, i have never felt more qualified to compelte a job before. The lab i worked in allowed me to plan and complete my own work wothout supervision and i was responsible for a large investigation which had high audit profile.
I was considered as part of the full time team and therefore people sought my advice on particualr projects and pieces of work. my opinion was also considered like a permanent member of staff in all areas both within and out of the lab.
I revieved constructive feedback on a monthly basis through a PDP program. I was informed of ways i could imporve and never felt like i couldnt ask for help if i needed it.
i was kept busy through routine work which involved monitoring as well as consulting production areas on various aspects and also involved in a number of projects. I never felt like there wasnt something i couldnt be getting on with and the staff in the lab promote forward thinking and always looking for improvements.
Once trained i was reponsible for planning my own work and ensuring that work was conducted as per the training. There was never any supervision as it was trusted that once trained i was competent in completing the tasks i had been given. I authored a report that outlined the reduction in certain testing and this was authorised and has impacted a number of areas.
Learning how to interact with different people in different areas and sometimes convince people that your opinion is right is something that cannot be learnt at university or with any amount of study. The kind of work ethic and pro-activeness i have gained will be helpful in completing my final year and beyond.
The Company
The lab i worked in was not only a professional environment with people interacting about work and sharing knowledge but also a very sociable lab with many outings and social events. As long as the work was completed and a professional manor adopted there was no reason for people not to have a laugh.
I knew exactly what area i was working in when i arrived and was then quickly trained and able to complete my own work. I had regular review sessions with management to help me develop.
I recieved the same amount of training as a full time member of staff including health and safety, sustainability and GMP (good manufacturing practice). if there was an area that i needed training in all i had to do was ask and i was able to do this as long as it was of benefit for myself and the company.

If there is a space availiable for when i graduate i will get a job back in the lab. i have also been offered positions elsewhere in manufacturing if there are positions availiable. I have been told my senior management if i contact them they will try and accommadate a position for me somewhere.
The Culture
There were not many IP students at my site so didnt have any connection with them, but the lab and environment i worked in was very social anyway so i found i became very friendly with them.
The area is expensive as it is so close to london but i was still able to have my own flat and socialise without worrying to much about finances as the salary was fairly good.
there are plenty of pubs in the area although just outside there are towns with lots of shopping malls and clubs etc and many other things to do.
I played badminton for the GSK team and captained the mens team. i also playesd in the squash league that was through GSK. There are always plenty of things you can do outside of work.
