The Role
The placement I was given was nothing to do with my course (even though I made a point of stressing that's what I wanted to be involved with). I was chosen to fill a position more because of my past work experience rather then my actual university degree. This was very disheartening and I didn't have a choice to go for any other jobs, it was either this or nothing. The only redeeming feature I had all year was the small close group of friends that I made.
The only reason I felt valued by my colleagues is because the amount of responsibly there was on my shoulders meant that If I didn't do my job properly the the whole department would suffer for it. But generally I was spoken down to on a number of occasions from a select number of my small team.
As soon as I began my placement, It was pretty full on. So from the begining I was thrown in at the deep end because they needed someone to do the job asap. I was giving limited guidance due to the staff having lack of time and got given a hugh document to read throug....but took nothing in from it. It was very much learn on the the job as you go, but there is also a lot of issues that can arise when you get it wrong. Long term, I wasn't given the opportunity to do any other education. I tried to do some on line learning and some giveback but found this very difficult, due to members of my team interrupting me on a large amount of basis and not dealing with any issues them selves. This meant work became very tense and stressful.
99% of the time I was ridiculously busy. Many times I had to come in early or leave around 7-8 at night. On some occasions I event worked from home after work hours or on the weekend. I am not work shy and don't mind putting in extra when needed but this got to a ridiculous point. It wasn't only me, other Industrial trainees in my department had the same pressure and problems as me. Any there wasn't any over time paid or extra time holiday given.
Most of the work responsibility was placed on the industrial trainees. Too much in fact, things shouldn't be run like this in such an important part of the company.
Other then some general communication skills and some confidence building I didn't gain anything to benefit my degree. And a lot of the other work environment skills I already knew because I have had full time jobs in the past.
The Company
Everyone were pretty busy. The only atmosphere in the office is when the placement students chatted, but we always got told to stop talking or that we were too loud. This dampened the mood.
My first day was a sham. My boss gave me to the current workers who had no idea what to do with me. The majority of my first week was pointless, I had nothing to do and my laptops wasn't set up. I felt like a burden on the team as I didn't have anything to do and everyone were too busy to give me any time.
As I stated earlier, I was given the opportunity to complete any formal training. When I tried to complete on-line training I was contently disrupted by colleagues which made training near impossible.
Sports and Social Club
I don't want to come back.
The Culture
Nope not really.
Living cost in general was quite a lot, especially for what you get in return. Also the general activities/shopping locations around the area are minimal. I think you can get bored very very quickly!
There wasn't much of one unless you go into Southampton, but it is a dump.
Not unless you played football at lunch time.
