The Role
I absolutely loved working at GS. Even though it was hard work, I had so much fun and met so many amazing and interesting people. There was so much to take in at first, and it felt like learning a new language with all the financial jargon! However, once I got into the swing of things and took on more responsibility, I learnt more and more which gave me confidence. The work was so varied, and I felt like the work was different everyday, which gave the job more colour - never a dull moment!
Placement students at GS are treated like 1st year Analysts, and can take part in learning activities and events amongst fellow employees. We were given real responsibility as we took part in global projects which were sponsored by very senior management. This gave me a real sense of purpose as this allowed me to add value to the firm. Colleagues would always support me both in project work and daily tasks. Like permanent GS employees, I was given a 'buddy' and a 'mentor' who were there to give us guidance and advice throughout the year.
I regularly had 1-2-1s with my managers, including the senior department managers, which also helped me to feel valued. During these sessions, we would discuss my progress and they would give me advice on how I could improve. I also had a 'buddy' in my team, who I could ask those 'silly questions', and also a 'mentor' who would give more broad advice. This helped my development significantly.
Very busy! There is a lot of work and I sometimes felt like it was hard to juggle all of my projects and tasks. However, as I had a great support network, I was taught how to manage my time and learnt how to prioritise different work items. Even with a large workload, as you learn to effectively prioritise, it becomes much more manageable. Also, as teamwork is a major focus at GS, if my capacity was stretched I would tell my manager or buddy and the team would give a helping hand.
The firm’s view on development is apparent as the role I was given as a work placement is more aligned to that of a GS Analyst, as I wasn't just shadowing and working on low priority projects. I was given a real role within the firm, working with clients, managing risk on behalf of the team, and working on global projects assigned by senior management.
The experience of working in GS has greatly developed both my technical skills as well as my interpersonal skills. Due to the firm’s strong belief in Diversity, I have been able to work with people all over the world, from different backgrounds and cultures. Placement students were strongly advised to present to work colleagues, including senior managers and MDs. This definitely improved my confidence and presentation skills. I also learnt so much about the banking industry and how GS operates successfully as a large firm.
The Company
Friendly people - lots of work but occasionally have a laugh.
Very well organised - the year was organised by a group of people within the firm, and included activities, presentations, knowledge sharing sessions and skills workshops.
Completely - the first 2 weeks of the placement was solid training. GS understands that there is no room for error, especially when dealing with clients. This lead to a brilliant learning environment where questions are more than welcome. There were also continuous training and learning sessions throughout the year.

If you add value and there is capacity, then you may receive an offer. (Not sure if I have a place yet).
The Culture
Placement students occasionally met up together to socialise, however I found I was too tired!
Central London will always be expensive!
A few bars and clubs around. Went out a few times, but found it tiring the next day!
Lots of networking events and team socialising. We also had 'Community Teamworks Day' where every GS employee volunteers for a charity.
