The Role
I really enjoyed my time at CGT. It was a refreshing change from Education and gave me an insight into the business world. The placement has been fun and interesting through out mantaining participation in new projects on a regular basis.
I felt valued by my colleagues. I some times felt that doing odd jobs for colleagues went unappreciated as it became almost routine but never the less we have a very close department and get on extremely well. I have had all the support I needed and really felt a part of the team.
I was given good guidance by my manager. When ever I had queries or concerns she helped me solve them problems. When ever I needed anything she did her best to make sure I get what I needed.
When I first started it was a bit boring. There was no structured work plan or any set objectives. I how ever got around this by quickly getting involved with as much as I could and showing my potential. Once the department saw I was motivated and commited I was quickly given plenty to do. I got involved in all sections in my department from Inventory to freight and now find it hard to find the time to complete all my work. I how ever prefer it this way as I am not one who relishes in sitting idle.
The level of responsibility I was given was vast. I was allowed to lead huge projects and develop large complex systems. I was surprised at how much I was allowed to do and really feel that being given the oppurtunity to get involved with these high profile projects has really allowed me to develop as a person and gain excellent skills and confidence.
As mentioned before the skills I have acquired are skills that will help me through out the rest of my life. It has given me huge confidence and skills in all areas from technical skill to communication skills. This year out has defintely equiped me well for my final year and I feel a lot more confident going into final year after being exposed to Logistics in a real life situation
The Company
It was a good atmosphere, we always managed to have a laugh. We made sure we all got our tasks done and supported each other to ensure the department performed well. It was how ever a nice atmosphere to work in with everyone working in a friendly way rather then a strictly business approach.
This was one of the only let downs of the placement. There was no work plan set up for me or any set objectives. This mean it was a slow start. However the more I showed willingness to get stuck in the more oppurtunities I was given and now I am involved with so much that I find it hard to keep up with everything. This has allowed me to see a lot and gain alot of key skills and a real insight into the whole broader picture.
The firm provided us with Sykes training. This was a 3 day course led by an external company. They went through everything us from how to deal with situations in a business place in a professional way to presentation and critical decision making. It taught us to work together and there were team building evxercises set up.

If the department is looking for a Graduate position next year I will be the first person they contact. How ever if there is no need for a graduate at the time then I haven't got a secured place here at Cummins which I think is fair. Cummins do an excellent 2 year grad scheme so I am keeping optimistic.
The Culture
There was 12 of us placements and we all got on smashingly. We often met outside of work and I also went to the gym on a daily basis with 3 of the placements. We went out on weekends and the highlight has to be the Jack Wills varsity polo Day and Night event which we went to in Windsor. This really helped as I knew no one here at Stamford and having a close friend group make the experience more enjoyable.
Stamford isn't the cheapest of places to live but it is a nice place to be. If compared to London it is cheaper. But on the whole it is fairly dear. However with the wages and my student loan I never felt like I was struggling and I had adequate money to do what I wanted to do.
There is only one night club called Central. Need I say more.
If you like to go to work events outside of work Cummins is the company for you. They have a strong culture for holding work events and there are always things to get invovled with. Since my time here there has been everything from pub quiz's to a Cummins olympic family event. Other include ice skating and meals out. Cummins relish in extra curricular activites and if that is your thing then look no further.
