The Role
Such a nice place to work, learnt so much about the working world and made some great friends along the way.
Varied from person to person but generally amazing. When being assigned work, people weren't patronising and made you feel like your work was appreciated. Even if the task was mundane, you would receive an apology and be given more exciting work in the future.
Support and guidance were always there from the management should you ever need to call on them. Generally, they had their own thing to do, but with such nice people around you it doesn't really matter.
"Peaks and troughs." Heard that so many times since day 1, and it was true. On some days it would be really busy and others there wouldn't be much to do. End of the days (between 3pm-5pm) were much busier and Fridays were probably the busiest days of the week with people dishing out work that they needed to do before the weekend. Didn't find myself staying a lot longer than 5pm on most occasions though, which was nice.
Much more responsibility than I had expected. We were doing chargeable client work pretty much every day. The best feeling is when a calculation you've done from scratch is checked and then typed up in a letter ready to be sent out to the client; it makes all the number crunching seem worth it in the end.
Studying Actuarial Science doesn't help as much as I thought it would when it comes to day to day work in the office. The extensive training we received (over 15hours worth) covers everything you need to know. Basic principles apply but apart from that its a lot more practical than the stuff taught at uni.
The Company
Buzzing. Didn't expect an office to be so much fun. I am writing this after spending my lunch break playing sports at the park with a lot of people and having ice cream provided on my return, so this may be a bias time to comment on this. Everyone is really friendly, and always up for a laugh.
Absolutely faultless. From beginning to end, the internship was so organised that it really made interns feel valued. From the inductions, to the training, to the guidance and support we were given along the way, it was clear that this programme was well thought out and planned.
A LOT of time and effort had been put into our trainings and I feel like an asset to the organisation.
Subsidised Canteen
Above 25 days holiday
It's the place to be.
The Culture
With 10 interns in total at the office, it was nice to have other people in the same boat as you. At any occasion, we would go for drinks or lunch together. Also, there were loads of new graduate recruits as well, so in total quite a few young people who were also new to the corporate world.
Reigate is quite expensive (a lot cheaper than London).
Being in business district was a drawback in terms of nightlife. Apart from a few scattered pubs/ bars, there wasn't much really going on in the evenings.
Literally so much to do outside of work. Socials every week whilst we were there (sometimes more often than that). Football, badminton, volleyball, volunteering,... The list is endless.
