The Role
The internship was enjoyable - the only down side was the disorganisation and lack of communication initally between HR and my project supervisor.
Within the team that I was working in, I felt that I was valued as a colleague and they were interested in hearing about the project that I was working on. I was made to feel welcome - with lunch invites and tinvites to team social events outside of work.
Out of the 12 week internship my project supervisor was away for just over 5 weeks. The majority of this time was at the start of the internship which was frustrating as it meant that it took me longer to settle into the project. It was also necessary for me to remind my supervisor that I would need a temporary supervoro/mentor togo to for help/advice whilst he was away. I did however, get support from various other members of the team, but it was difficult to schedule time with them as I wasn't a priority for them.
At the start of the project I wasn't very busy and spent a lot of time doing background reading and killing time, however once I got started with the project I was able to take controol over the amount of work I was doing, so I was quite busy doing work, presenting work or attending meetings.
I was given control over the direction of my project and the I had a lot of responsibility to ensure I completed the project, and presented results to the various asset teams.
Some skills are useful for any office environment. From a geophysics point of view the skills I developed are very useful for further studies and also for future work prospects.
The Company
Everyone in my team area was really firendly and approachable. There were various social activities planned for the team out of office hours.
In theroy the internship process is well organised from the time you start applying until your final assesment. However, I found that there seemed to have been a lack of communication between HR and my project supervisor and he didn't know anything about my background or what srt of internship I was doing or whetehr it was for a Masters Project. This was disappointing and also caused a lot of unwated confusion and stress at the start of the placement. But once the initial confusion and disorganisation was overcome - the internship ran smoothly and was well organised.
I got basic software training as an intern. As a graduate they invest much more into your development and this is made very clear.

Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
Shell seem like a really good company to work for - with lots of opportunties to travel with work.
The Culture
The interns were all sociable. A lot of them were doing their Masters projects with Shell - so they ahd a lot of work on outside of office hours.
Much more expensive than at University. Aberdeen caters for the rich oil and gas workers!
Lots of bars, pubs and clubs.
Lots of sports activities in the local area.
