The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed mky placement at Grant Thornton for a variety of reasons. The first was that the work was reflective of work that I would undertake as an auditor, so therefore it gave me a real business insight into this field. I also was allowed to try out different sectors of the business so I gained an overall general feel for the company and its different departments. We also undertook a corporate responsibility day, which was great fun and allowed me to meet with interns from all over the UK.
I was given a lot of responsibility but also a lot of support by all colleagues. Everyone was friendly and approachable, and was welcomed well into the team. I was also invited along to all of the social events held my the team (including the much anticipated football tournament!), which was great and really made me feel like a valued member of the team.
Help was always at hand whenever I needed it. All of the staff, not only the managers were helpful so everyone was approachable if I had a problem. I never felt like I was 'in at the deep end' on my own, help was always at hand when needed.
I undertook work in a variety of different departments, and the work varied in each. Whilst working, some sectors of the business were busier than others so there was always a good amount of work to do. I was given work as and when I had finished what I was doing so there was no pressure to work too fast or rush.
I was given a lot of responsibility whilst at Grant Thornton. This ranged from holding conversations with clients, to ownership over my own pieces of work. The responsibility was never too much, but was enough to make me feel like a valued member of the team.
Whilst at Grant Thornton I went away to a training centre for two days with other interns. The training centre was such a good experience and many of the skills I learnt there will be applicable to my studies at University but also will aid my career and in general everyday life. Presentation skills were a key part of the training, which will aid me greatly at university.
The Company
There was a great positive atmosphere in the office, people were very welcoming and happy to help.
My placement was incredibly well organised from the start. From the first day I was given a timetable for the 4 weeks, so I knew what was coming up. This was really helpful but I was also alllowed to highlight some different areas of the business I would like to work in if they weren't already included on my timetable. This allowed for me to gain an insight into different parts of the business.
We went along to the company's training centre for two days, all expenses paid to attend a two-day course.

They are very keen to take on all interns as graduate recruits so the prospects are very high.
The Culture
I attended a training course with the other interns and also a corporate responsibility day. This was great as I was the only intern in my office so it was good to meet other people and share our experiences!
I lived at home whilst on my placement, however the cost of living in the area isn't particularly high. In terms of socialising, the town next to the one I worked in is best for this, but isn't far away!
Again, nightlife is located in the town next to the one I worked, but a taxi there is cheap so it is not difficult to get to.
As stated previously, I was invited along to the national football team and out with work colleagues to dinner. Other than this, there are many occasions on which the office participate in activities outside of work hour together.
