The Role
I really enjoyed my placement- I was given a wide range of different tasks and things to do, giving me a genuine experience of work within the firm. It certainly wasn't all the photocopying and making tea that you expect!
My team looked after me well, and certain individuals were very good about giving me work to do and were patient with my questions and my constantly asking if I could help. Other members were a little less approachable, but the team was quite large so this could be expected
My manager (designated to me as my Councellor) was fantastic in giving me a wide range of jobs to do, some which I felt were making a real difference and impact on the client. He guided me through the internship process well and was very supportive.
There was one week out of the five in which I had very little to do, which was a little bit frustrating. However, towards the end I had more and more responsibility and felt more busy, which I imagine it would be like if you start as a full-time graduate. The difficulty was that I have no professional qualifications, which my line of work required, therefore I actually spent more time busy than I expected.
More and more responsibility towards the end, in filing tax returns which takes up the bulk of the workload for a new graduate starter.
I learnt some key skills for working in a large coroporation, such as interacting with clients and communicating with the team. I built confidence in asking others around me for help, and obviously gained good experience with the internal IT systems used.
The Company
Everybody was quite busy, with some atmosphere sometimes, but mostly neutral.
Very well organised- so many brilliant socials to get to know the other interns, and four dedicated members of staff on hand 24/7 to answer any queries that come up.
Invested in IT training, and specific induction to the firm for three days.
Subsidised Canteen
Company Parties/Events
Very well organised graduate scheme with opportunities for sponsored qualifications studying and great job prospects.
The Culture
Very social- within the smaller office I was in, the group of five was very social, and with all the interns, there were regular events arranged by the internship team and arranged by interns themselves. most nights had something to do after work, be it drinks, dinner, bowling, extracurricular fair or a quiz night.
London- expensive, but I am from the city so am used to it.
London has the best clubs and bars in the country- plenty of places to socialise.
Quite a few- discussions on graduate recruitment and networks within the firm. Also loads of great events run by the campus team for my univeristy.
