The Role
I am really enjoying my experience at Towers Watson, much better than getting a standard holiday job.
From the start all the staff were really welcoming and approachable. Everyone appreciated that you would have questions about work and were happy to help.
Although you don't have much contact with your supervisor she did check how we were doing. Support usually came from the person who set you the particular task you were working on or the people who sat around you.
In general I was kept the perfect level of busy. However on odd occassions there was a bit of a lull in work, but this provided time to work on our intern project so it wasn't so bad.
We were trusted to do calculations on our own, jsut asking for suport when required. However all work goes through a do, check, review process so you were never worried that mistakes wouldn't get spotted.
My placement has taught me a variety of skills surrounding the actuarial profession, which would be invaluable for persuing a career in this field. However as my degree is in Maths and Chemistry the skills won't really trasfer over to my degree.
The Company
The atmosphere was friendly, with plenty of people to chat to over lunch.
The internship was very well organised. Although having a training session on a Thursday down in Reigate was a bit of a pain, as it was a long way to travel after work on the Wednesday and meant you got back late before you had to go to work on the Friday.
At our office we recieved 3 training seesion on pensions and how to calculate trasfer values (what the bulk of our intern work is). This was invaluable, however I am under the impression that this is office specific as opposed to company wide.
National Travel
Company Parties/Events
A large amount of interns get offered graduate jobs following their placements, so fingers crossed!
The Culture
We have been out for drinks the afternoon after actuarial exam results came out to celebrate 3 people becoming qualified. There is also an office BBQ which us aas interns have organised next week.
Manchester is a very cheap city with regards to living costs and the costs of socialising.
The Manchester nightlife is varied and depending on where you go can be very cheap.
Apart from social activities there are opportunities to get involved with sport. Many of the staff will go and play badminton/squash and some of the guys go and play football most weeks.
