The Role
The placement was great.
In many cases I would be producing work that would go out to clients. As I progressed through the internship the responsibility that I was given increased to the point where I was trusted to complete the majority of work to a good standard with minimal guidance.
We were encouraged to ask questions at any time making the steep learning curve much easier to handle.
Sometimes work would be limited, however it was easy to fill in this time with research or more admin-based tasks for other team members.
From my first day I was thrown in the deep end, producing documents for clients. As the internship continued this increased.
Both hard and soft skills. We spend a couple days at Bradenham Mannor - Grant Thornton's training facility near High Wycombe. Whilst here we attended a course on "business impact". This course tackled many skills considered soft, and massively improved my presentation skills. During the time in the office, having been encouranged to ask questions, we learnt much about the insurance industry and other areas that actuaries work in.
The Company
Great fun. Everyone was approachable, no matter how high up they were.
Every now and then we would be left with little to do, however we had presentations that we could prepare for, so there was always something to do. We had a weekend at their training facility with the interns from other departments where we were taught very useful skills for a working environment.
The training weekend for presentation and business impact was very useful - and included a weekend with free meals!
Subsidised Canteen
Company Parties/Events
Great! A lot of interns were converted.
The Culture
Lots of events organised by both Grant Thornton and ourselves.
London - very expensive. However at after work drinks many of the managers would but their card behind the bar.
Lots of clubs and bars nearby with plenty of other interns in, but it was very expensive!
At one point myself and another intern played dodgeball with a partner, we also got asked if we fancied playing football, it was just a shame that they were playing in Manchester!
