The Role
I absolutely loved it! The people are friendly, the beauty sector is great fun (if you are passionate about it!) and the amount of responsibility you are given (if you earn it) is really exciting.
I was a proper member of the team and was treated as a collegue not a student. Everyone is so friendly. My team and I regularly went out socials including bingo!
I had my own development plan where at the beginning of the year I was asked what I would like to learn and acheive. I managed to acheive all of them thanks to 2 amazing managers (one left for maternity), senior manager and director. They were all keen to give me as much responsibility as I wanted and could handle and I learnt so much from them.
I was quite busy throughout the year - especially as I gained more responsibility. But I wanted the extra responsibility so I didn't mind and I loved the job so much that if something needed doing I wouldnt mind too much if I had to stay to finish something. Having said that I usually left on time, making sure I'd completed all the necessary tasks for that day.
I got to own a project from start to end. It involved the development of a new fragrance and I had to work closely with engineers, sourcing and costing colleagues to create the right product for market (the European market which made it even more exciting!). I got to choose things like the design of the logo, colours, brief model photography and pick the best shots for brochure. I never felt out of depth though because my colleagues were happy to answer any questions and give advice.
I am more confident, able to make decisions, more organised and I understand how a business works a lot better.
The Company
Fun but in a way that it didn't distract you from your work!
We had a good induction to the company and I had a leaving placement questionnaire which my manager completed with me.
Avon invested so much into me that I feel a bit guilty for returning to university!! I was in the fragrance team and was given training by top perfumers and perfume houses - such a fantastic opportunity.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Financial Bonus
Company Parties/Events
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
Avon would have back placement students that have worked hard and have proved themselves.
The Culture
There were two other placement girls so we went out sometimes on Saturdays and Avon put on a few company parties and socials throughout the year.
Northampton is cheap compared to places like London. However I rented a flat with my fiance which is slightly more expensive than a student house so we had to watch our pennies a bit!
Plymouth is better but it wasn't too bad!
I joined the gym and my team and I went out a few times!
